Crude oil exports from the northern Kurdish region of Iraq will resume in early February, Kawa Mahmud, a spokesman for the Kurdistan Regional Government, said in a telephone interview today.
Oil exports will resume “in the first few days of February” from Kurdistan after a halt of more than a year following a conflict on oil sales proceeds with the central government, he said.
The decision to resume oil exports came after a final agreement during a meeting late yesterday between Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Barham Salih, he said.
Details about the exports, including the quantity of oil to be shipped, will be announced in a press conference by Kurdistan’s Natural Resource Minister Ashti Hawrami, he said.
Iraq, home to the world’s fifth-biggest oil reserves, seeks foreign funding and expertise to help it boost energy exports needed to pay for modernizing an economy stunted by years of conflict and sanctions.
